How we pick powered subs
Picking the right powered sub is mostly about fit, integration and expectations — here’s how I evaluate them in the shop and on installs.
Measure carefully, especially under power seats with motors/vents. Leave room for cables and port breathing.
Keeping the factory radio? Prioritize speaker-level inputs, signal sensing/auto-on and a remote bass knob. A quality DSP/LOC can transform trickier OEM systems.
Variable low-pass, phase/polarity and a bass boost are the basics — enough to blend cleanly with your door speakers.
Even compact powered subs need solid power/ground and the right wiring kit. Under-seat units are about tasteful fill; trunk enclosures deliver more impact.
Choosing a powered sub
- Under-seat or trunk? Under-seat units (Focal IBus, Infinity SM2) are about tasteful fill in tight spaces; a trunk-mounted ported box (the JL) delivers noticeably more impact.
- Keeping the factory radio? Choose a model with speaker-level inputs and auto-on. For trickier OEM systems, a quality DSP/LOC like the Axxess AXDSPL makes a night-and-day difference.
- What about wiring? Even compact powered subs draw real current — use an appropriate amp wiring kit and plan your ground point up front.
- Will I outgrow it? If you think you will, plan a modular path with a separate amp; start with my best car amplifiers guide.
My top powered subwoofers
JL Audio ACP110LG-TW1
All-in-one powered 10″ + 400W Class-D (DCD)
Buy-now clicks support our testing. This doesn't affect our picks.
Why I picked it
Built in JL’s Florida facility, this system’s V-Groove MDF box, flared slot port, and TW1 low-clearance driver with concentric-tube suspension produce big-system bass from a compact footprint. DCD amplification maximizes a 12-volt supply into a ¼-ohm TW1 load for real 400W RMS performance without the heat or current draw typical of larger multi-amp builds.
Curious how it compares to compact under-seat units? See our Sony XS-AW8 first-look and our RAM 1500 under-seat install walkthrough.
| Make | JL Audio |
| Model | ACP110LG-TW1 |
| Type | Powered (all-in-one) |
| RMS Power | 400W (built-in Class-D) |
| Driver | 10″ TW1 |
| Enclosure | Ported MDF (≈21×13.5×6.6 in) |
Reasons to buy
- True one-box solution; fast, clean install
- Surprisingly big output from a compact footprint
- DCD amp + TW1 driver are purpose-matched
Reasons not to buy
- Not as configurable as separate amp + box + driver
- Height/length may still be tight for some under-seat spots
- Premium pricing vs entry powered boxes
Focal IBus 2.1
Under-seat 2.1: powered 8″ sub + 2-channel amp
Buy-now clicks support our testing. This doesn't affect our picks.
Why I picked it
I like the IBus 2.1 for OEM-plus builds where replacing the head unit isn’t in the cards. It powers your front speakers and adds tasteful, tight bass from under a seat — a genuine 2.1 architecture in one compact aluminum chassis.
Note: as of 2024, Focal lists the IBus 2.1 as no longer available. If you can’t find it from an authorized dealer, pair the IBus 20/25 with a compact two-channel amp (e.g., Focal Impulse) to recreate a similar 2.1 solution. For factory integration, my Axxess AXDSPL DSP/LOC walkthrough covers a clean signal path.
| Make | Focal |
| Model | IBus 2.1 |
| Type | Powered 2.1 sub + amp |
| RMS Power | 75W sub + 2×55W |
| Driver | 8″ |
| Best Placement | Under seat |
| Enclosure | Low-profile aluminum |
Reasons to buy
- Under-seat fit with refined, controlled bass
- Genuine 2.1 architecture simplifies OEM upgrades
- Clean install with included harness and remote
Reasons not to buy
- Often discontinued / out of stock — consider the IBus 20/25 + compact 2-ch amp
- Less raw output than larger trunk-mounted enclosures
Infinity BassLink SM 2
Slim under-seat powered 8″ · 125W Class-D
Buy-now clicks support our testing. This doesn't affect our picks.
Why I picked it
For budget-friendly, under-seat bass, the BassLink SM2 is easy to recommend. I like the included remote level knob, the sensible tuning controls, and the small footprint. It won’t shake mirrors, but it absolutely fills in the missing bottom octave on factory systems.
The molded ABS chassis keeps weight and height down without rattles when mounted securely, and the 125W Class-D amp stays cool with the essentials: gain, low-pass, bass boost, phase and auto-turn-on. Adding it to a factory radio? My amp wiring guide will help you plan the run and grounds.

| Type | Powered (under-seat) |
| RMS Power | 125W Class-D |
| Driver | 8″ |
| Best Placement | Under seat |
| Enclosure | Sealed ultra-slim ABS |
Reasons to buy
- Great price-to-performance; true under-seat fit
- Wired remote included for quick level tweaks
- Speaker-level friendly for factory stereos
Reasons not to buy
- Not for SPL chasers; output is limited by size
- Requires a separate wiring kit (not included)

Powered subwoofer FAQ
What is a powered subwoofer?+
A powered (active) sub is a subwoofer, amplifier and enclosure in one matched package. The amp is sized to the driver and box, so there’s no separate amp to research — you drop it in and wire it up.
Powered or component sub?+
Powered subs are simpler and space-efficient — ideal for clean, musical fill with an easy install. If you’re chasing earth-shaking SPL or want full control over box and amp, a component sub setup is the way to go.
Can a powered sub run off my factory radio?+
Yes — choose a model with speaker-level inputs and signal-sensing auto-on. For factory systems with processing, add a DSP/LOC for a clean signal.
