About the Metra AX-TOYUSB USB Port Adapter

Jon Paul

Keep your Toyota's USB port working

Metra's AX-TOYUSB cable allows you to keep the factory USB port in your Toyota when you install a new car stereo. One end of the cable connects to the 4-pin proprietary plug just behind the USB port on your Toyota's console, while the other end plugs into the USB port on the back of your new car stereo. You must install a car stereo with a rear USB port. Warranty: 60 days.

Product Research

Features

USB Adapter Harness: The AX-TOYUSB lets you retain the factory USB port in select 2012-up Toyota vehicles when replacing the factory radio with an aftermarket head unit that features a rear USB input.

  • Additional kit and harness will be necessary to replace your Toyota factory radio with an aftermarket receiver.
  • As long as your new car stereo has a high-amperage charging port (1.5A or greater), this USB adapter harness should support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto operation. However, the number of variables involved means we can't guarantee compatibility.

Q
Why does the description state "The AX-TOYUSB is not compatible with CarPlay or Android Auto". Is this just not merely an extension of the USB port on the radio ? What do I need to get Android auto to work on my Galaxy S5 extended from an NEX4200 to the Toyota factory jack then ?

This adapter was shipped with the install kit for my 2013 RAV4. It doesn't work because the port in my car is a combination USB with AUX port. The new head unit does not have AUX and can't understand the input from the built-in combination port. I replaced the built in combination port with an aftermarket USB only port that fits my dash and connects to the extension USB cables on the head unit, bypassing the car's wiring. Works fine now.

Works fine on my ILX-F309

I don't know why it would say that. I have an NEX6000 which does not support Android Auto, so I don't know much about it. I thought that adapter was just a USB extension cable, so not sure why it would not work. I assume it depends on whether the head unit supports the cable and Android Auto, but just guessing.

Q
Will this work on a 2015 subaru BRZ? i tried a PAC USB-SB1 which was for 2013 and up BRZ but the connector was too small.

No, it does not work in a BRZ, FR-S, or a GT-86. the oem jack on the back of the usb/aux plug is a male jack and this cable is a male connector. Further more, the oem usb/aux jack requires a plug with both the usb and the aux in one and cannot be modified to fit this particular adaptor. you will either need to find a proper version of the adaptor or completely change out the oem usb/aux plugs all together. (or start splicing wires)

Not sure. I used it on my 2014 Tacoma and it did connect fine to the oem usb/aux port. My Tacoma did not have a JBL sound system.

Yes--I have a 2013 Toyota Tacoma. This cable connects through the OEM in-dash USB/AUX. I keep a USB-Thunderbolt cable plugged in for my iPhone. Charges and plays music well. I got an Alpine bluetooth deck unit as well. The wire harness for the Toyota steering wheel controls works as advertised. I have no issues. The only thing I've noticed is that the audio quality is better (and louder) when I connect through the USB/AUX cable, rather than bluetooth. Hope this helps.

Yes, this is the wiring harness adapter to allow use of the dashboard USB AUX. I used it when installing the aftermarket stereo in my 2013 Tacoma.

Yes. I plugged it directly in to existing factory plug. Works great!

It connects to the wiring behind the radio and goes to the female USB connector in the dash. This way you can plug this into the back of a radio that has a back USB port and then utilize the in-dash (OEM) female USB outlet with your media devices. Hope this helps.
